Little House on the Prairie

January 9, 2011

When I was growing up, my mom owned 11 houses.  She would rent most out and I have many memories of going to the houses to collect rent, or clean up/fix up between renters.  She eventually sold most and now owns 3.

One of the houses was the house she grew up in.  My grandpa built it when she was a baby and without permitting and doing the work himself, you probably can’t even imagine how this house turned out.

When I graduated high school, I decided I wanted to live in that house.  It had sat empty for 10 years.  There was a hole in the kitchen ceiling where you could see the trees above.  While we were cleaning up the house one day, I walked into the kitchen to see my stepdad & soon to be roommate tugging at something from the rafters.  It was a giant snake!  SNAKE!  I hate snakes & they’re pulling one out of the rafters!  It wouldn’t be the only time I dealt with snakes in that house, but we’ll get into that at a later date.

Fast forward about 15 years and my parents moved into the house.  They’re living there all fine and dandy when the insurance company sends them a letter demanding that they remove 5 trees, or their insurance will be nullified.  They said that these particular trees looked like they may fall on the house.  Being do-it-yourselfers, they called my cousin to bring his backhoe over and help remove the trees.  While removing one of the trees, it fell on the house and deemed the house unlivable.

That was July.  It is now January and the insurance company is finally on board and they demolished the house today.  There are mixed feelings about the house no longer being there.  There are so many funny memories in that house, yet there were so many problems with it structurally that it needs to be demolished.

The new house will be a home for my parents and they will be better for it, but I will forever miss the little house on the prairie that I once lived in.
